Day 5: The Body That Yields Together

Reading: Ephesians 4:15-16
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Devotional:
Paul's vision for the church is a body that functions together, each part contributing, each member lifting the others, all of it directed by Jesus as the head. This does not happen by accident. It requires every member to release the posture of a consumer and embrace the posture of a servant. A healthy church is not built by those who demand the most from it but by those who give the most to it. When we yield to one another out of reverence for Christ, something remarkable happens. The body begins to move as one. The mission becomes clear. The presence of God becomes evident.
Are you approaching your church as a place to receive or as a body to which you are called to contribute? What is holding you back from deeper commitment?
Identify one specific way you can serve or build up another member of your church this week. Do it without announcing it or expecting recognition.

I think if we’re honest, this is one of the hardest things to do. It requires us to put aside personal preference sometimes and to trust that God is leading others as well. When we learn to yield to God first, then to each other, we will become much stronger.
