Day 3: Raising Children in the Lord

Reading: Ephesians 6:4
4 Fathers,[a] do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Reading: Colossians 3:21
21 Fathers,[a] do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

Devotional:
Paul's instruction to parents is a profound counterbalance to the call for children to obey. Authority in the home is never meant to be wielded for the sake of control. Parents are called to train, to lift up, and to model the way of Jesus before their children. Discipline that provokes anger or crushes the spirit misses the heart of God entirely. The goal of parenting is not a compliant child but a child who has been shown what it looks like to walk with Jesus. Every correction, every boundary, and every sacrifice a parent makes should serve that greater purpose.
Whether you are a parent or were shaped by one, consider how the discipline you experienced or practiced has reflected or fallen short of God's design.
Parents, evaluate one area of your child's training this week. Ask whether your approach is building trust and pointing toward Christ or simply demanding compliance.
