Day 3: Discernment in Giving

Reading: 1 Timothy 5:3-16

Paul's instructions to Timothy seem harsh to modern ears, but they reveal profound wisdom. Not every request should receive the same response. The church must discern between genuine need and dependency, between helping and enabling. This isn't about being stingy—it's about being faithful stewards.
True compassion sometimes says "no" to what's asked and offers something better. It requires us to look beyond the surface, to pray for wisdom, and to follow the Holy Spirit's leading rather than guilt or obligation. When we help without discernment, we can actually harm both the individual and the community's ability to help those in true need.
Helping well requires both generous hearts and wise minds, guided always by the Spirit.

Is there a situation where God is calling you to offer something different than what's being requested?
