Day 3: Obedience Beyond Comfort Zones

Reading: Acts 10:19-23

19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three[a] men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”

21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

Peter at Cornelius’s House

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along.

Footnotes
[a] Acts 10:19 One early manuscript two; other manuscripts do not have the number.

Reading: Jonah 1:1-3

Jonah Flees From the Lord
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

Devotional:
When the Holy Spirit directed Peter to go with Cornelius's messengers, Peter obeyed despite cultural taboos and personal discomfort. This obedience required courage—Peter was violating deeply ingrained religious customs. Unlike Jonah, who fled from God's call to reach the Gentiles in Nineveh, Peter stepped forward in faith. God often calls us beyond our comfort zones to participate in His mission. He may ask us to befriend someone different, serve in an unfamiliar context, or challenge our own prejudices. Obedience to God's leading sometimes means risking criticism from others who don't yet see what God is revealing. Where is God calling you to step out in faith today?
