Day 5: Your New Identity
Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10
Made Alive in Christ
2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

This identity isn't based on your performance, background, or past. It's based solely on being "in Christ." The world around you hasn't changed, but you have. Your mission, perspective, and very essence are different. You were once dead in sin; now you're alive in Christ. You were once following the ways of the world; now you follow Jesus. Today, declare over yourself: "I am a new creation. I belong to Jesus." Let this truth shape how you see yourself, how you make decisions, and how you walk through this day. I am a new creation. I belong to Jesus! ✝️
I was thinking about the consequences of The Fall today and how God told Adam and Eve: "But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day you eat of it you will surely die".

nAnd they didn’t die the day they ate of it.

nOr did they?

nCause Ephesians 2:5 says, “…even though we are dead because of our sins…” and it occurs to me that the death promised as a consequences of sin may not be only that of our bodies—which are now subject to physical death—but a spiritual death too. Adam and Eve lost close communion with God. They were suddenly subject to human desires. Their (our) hearts no longer yearn for the things of God. And my guess is that was an immediate consequence.

nSo in a sense, they did die that day. And God, when when we were dead, gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. That makes me want to shout a little.
