Becoming A Disciple
This message confronts us with one of the most challenging aspects of following Jesus: the requirement to surrender everything. Drawing from Luke 9:23 and Matthew 16:21-26, we're reminded that Jesus didn't soften His call to discipleship. He made it clear that following Him means giving up our own way, taking up our cross daily, and trusting Him completely. The cross isn't a decorative symbol here—it's an instrument of death, representing the death of our plans, our identity, and our schedules. What makes this message so powerful is its honesty about how we often settle for being 'Jesus curious' rather than fully committed. We fill our lives with good things—caring for family, building careers, pursuing education—but miss God's things. The distinction is crucial: are we living for ourselves, for others, for Jesus, or for some combination? Jesus says anything other than complete surrender disqualifies us from true discipleship. Yet there's grace woven throughout: Jesus spoke these words to Peter, who would later betray Him three times, and to disciples who doubted even as they received the Great Commission. He's not asking for perfection; He's asking for our hearts. The question we must answer is whether we're ready to unlock every door of our lives and give Jesus complete access, trusting that His way is better than our way, even when it costs us everything we thought we needed.
