The Identity Of A Disciple

Mar 15, 2026    Dave Gettel

This message challenges us to radically redefine our identity in Christ, moving beyond superficial Christianity to wholehearted discipleship. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 5 and Philippians 1, we're confronted with a profound three-step transformation: choosing to follow Jesus by surrendering our own way, being made completely new in our identity, and embracing our life mission as ambassadors for Christ. The sermon asks us to stop introducing ourselves by our professions or earthly roles and instead to recognize that our primary identity is as disciples of Jesus—everything else we do is secondary. Paul's example shows us what it means to say 'for me, living means living for Christ'—not as a tent maker who also preaches, but as an apostle who happens to make tents on the side. This isn't about adding Jesus to our busy lives; it's about recognizing that Jesus has made us entirely new people, and our old identity is gone. The challenge is clear: do we believe that Christ has truly defeated our sin and made us righteous? Can we look in the mirror and declare ourselves righteous in Christ? When we embrace this new identity, we naturally become passionate about sharing this gift with others, praying even for those who annoy us, because we desperately want them to experience the transformation we've received. Our life mission becomes reconciling people to God, speaking as Christ's ambassadors with the message that everyone can be made right with the King.
